Thursday, June 12, 2008 – I’m up; the dog is down.

I’m brand new at this blogging thing so bear with me.

First I want to thank my family for all of their support. Tom, Andrew, Kevin, my mom and siblings have just been tremendous over the past couple of weeks.

Each of you has played a big part in getting me back on my feet.

The care that you all and my medical care givers have provided has been second to none.

While I wish I could change the fact that I have cancer I wouldn’t change a thing about how everyone has helped me through this.

I’m doing fine with the care I’m getting with showers, meals, getting around and just doing regular things.

Today I started a three day regimen of the drug, Filgrastim also known as neupogen. This will build up my white blood cells so when the next round of chemo therapy lowers my white count it won’t wipe me out…at least that’s the theory. We’ll see how that goes.

I met with my physical therapist today. She’ll be coming a couple of times a week for the next several weeks to help me build up strength, especially in my legs so that it will be a little easier to get up the stairs in the evening. Coming down isn’t so bad and Tom and the boys are very watchful both coming and going.

I had great coverage today, Kevin is home from school and a school health colleague, Kathy came over for the day so I sent Tom back to work. But that was only after he dropped Ginger off at the vet for x-rays early this morning. Those x-rays show that Ginger has something abnormal in her abdomen. The next step is a sonagram to get a better picture.

There are still some lingering effects from last weekend’s chemo. One of them in particular will have me looking at a cranial prosthesis sooner rather than later.

Thanks for all of your prayers and support and I’ll try to keep up with this like Tom did.

Oh, my, it sounds as if sweet little Ginger is way too much on your wave length! But it sounds like you're coping well, and you've gotten the knack of blogging right off. I'm really glad you're getting such first rate care.

You are doing just fine with this blog thing. I'm so glad to hear you are meeting this challenge head-on. Leigh and I met up with you and Tom at Disney World several years ago. Tom will remind you (in detail I imagine) that I work with him and I will tell you he's incessant about you and your well being. Leigh and I keep you in our prayers always.

Betsy,
So glad you are home. I know being home will help with speeding up the healing process. The good thing about a "crainial prosthesis" is you get to choose color and length!
I think your first blog rocks! Tom doesn't have a thing to worry about with your blogging. Keep 'em coming!
We think about you everyday and are keeping you in our prayers.
Love,

So glad to "hear your voice". Sending support, prayers and smiles for more strength and quick recovery times from the assaults that are necessary for healing. If you think you are new at this blogging, you should be me. Nothing but the need to communicate with your family (and now you) would have driven me to this - I am so blog and IM challenged.

Love to you and your family.

Betsy, I am so glad you have taken over the blog!! I have known TR for too long and his Jesuit education was bogging down the blog at times!!! Hope all is fine with Ginger. Now that Mom is home, she will probably be fine in no time. Prayers are continuing...

Good morning Betsy!

I think yur first blog was great...and I am proud of you for maintaining your fighting spirit! Crainial prosthesis...hmmmm....sounds like it could be sort of like trying on grandma's hats....having a great time being something different! Maybe mini skirts and cowboy boots aren't quite your style but you will find something that really makes you sing....commencing Phase II...you continue to be central in my prayers and now I will be cheering for a little white dog too!

COngratulations on your new job as Blogger!! Not that Tom didn't do a great job, but there's nothing like getting it right from the horse's mouth. Bravo to both of you for keeping us all informed. It's so tough to be the dog. Things seem strange. You KNOW the people aren't acting right, but nobody quite speaks your language. Hope Ginger bounced back now that you're at home.

Let those great guys of your keep the wrap-around TLC coming!
